Measurements that match the question

Use allocated on-disk size for physical capacity questions or logical file length when content size is what matters.

  • Scan one or many folders, mounted volumes, removable drives, or reachable network shares.
  • Native file identity prevents hard links and directory aliases from silently multiplying totals.
  • Nested mounted volumes, unreadable items, and unavailable metadata remain visible boundaries instead of guesses.

Several views, one immutable index

Ask different questions of the same completed scan without rebuilding its data.

  • Group by folder, file extension, or practical file category.
  • Color independently by file type, last modification, or creation recency with a visible legend.
  • Compare top consumers and largest individual files inside the currently focused subtree.

Focused refresh with safe recovery

When one directory changes, SpaceLens can enumerate only that subtree and merge it back into the completed index.

  • Sibling subtrees stay exactly as they were in the prior index.
  • Ancestor totals and colors rebuild after cross-boundary hard links are reconciled.
  • Cancellation, missing access, or an unreadable root leaves the previous completed index available.

History that explains change

Bounded scan summaries preserve exact totals and the largest indexed nodes without duplicating every full tree.

  • Compare completed scans to see growth, shrinkage, additions, removals, and changes.
  • Optional watching marks an index stale when the filesystem changes after a scan.
  • Compressed snapshots restore the last completed index, even after a canceled rescan.

Evidence-backed duplicate and reclaim analysis

Equal size starts as a candidate, not a conclusion; optional SHA-256 verification distinguishes confirmed content matches.

  • Hash reads and result sets stay bounded and can be canceled.
  • Every reclaim proposal carries evidence, confidence, caveats, and a review requirement.
